St Mary
Tuddenham, Suffolk
The Breckland town of Mildenhall was well on the way to prosperity by the time of the Norman Conquest.
Mildenhall, Suffolk
This is reflected in the grandeur of its impressive church, which was rebuilt between the 13th and 15th centuries. Much distinguished medieval craftsmanship makes it one of the great churches of East Anglia.
The tall 15th century west tower and the huge Decorated east window, are the features that strike most visitors first.
The two storey north porch, of about 1420, makes a fittingly grand entrance, with its fine stone vault and roof bosses. Even more remarkable are the extravagant roofs above the nave and both aisles, embellished with throngs of carved angels and biblical figures.
The nave, especially, is a remarkable survival: unable to reach the immensely high carved angels to destroy them with their bare hands, the iconoclasts tried to shoot them to pieces instead. Many of the figures are still peppered with gunshot.
