Beautiful gothic style church built in 1839 with impressive integral tower and stained glass.

St Marys Catholic church was built in 1839 and opened in 1840. A gothic style construction, gable entry type with metal internal pillars. The church features an integral tower to which a parapet and pinnacles were added in 1869.
The present altar and Great War Memorial were erected in 1921, with another memorial tablet to those fallen in the Second World War placed in the Lady chapel in 1948.
Stained glass includes the 'Assumption of the Virgin' by John Hardman and the church organ is a magnificent piece that originally sat in the ballroom of the Beecham household. The church stands proudly on Stow Hill in Newport and was under construction when the Newport uprising took place led by John Frost and the Chartists. The 10,000 strong protesters marched past the site to their encounter with the British Army.
