St Bene't
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
St Bene't is the oldest church in Cambridge, dating from around 1020, the fine Saxon arch predates the Norman conquest.
The church is on the west side of the village, close to open farmland, it is a stern looking building on the outside, refaced in Bath stone in the 19th century, when the church was over thoroughly restored by William Butterfield.
Trumpington, Cambridgeshire
Inside, rather more of the history of the church is evident. Much of it dates from the early 14th century, though the earliest parts are from a century before that.
There are fragments of medieval glass in some of the windows (though most have dark Victorian glass), and an array of ancient coffin lids.
The church is renowned for having one of England's earliest brasses. This is to Sir Roger de Trumpington, who died in 1289. He is shown wearing chain mail, and his shield bears the Trumpingon coat of arms. The brass lies on a table tomb with canopy above that is of a later date than the brass.
