St Mary

Fields and trees surround this wonderful ancient church, which seems connected to the East Anglian landscape around it by its walls of flint cobbles and its roof of reed thatch.

Dating back to pre Conquest times, it has a small Saxon window in the west wall, and two Norman doorways.

The setting and the building are enchanting in themselves, but there is more inside: notably a rare, beautifully painted and gilded nine panel retable vividly depicting saints, in glowing colours, flanking a Crucifixion panel.

Thought to have been made in the 1330s for the Dominican priory at Thetford, this extraordinary masterpiece was discovered in a stable by Lord Henniker of Thornham Hallin 1927. The panel has a matching altar frontispiece, which somehow found its way into the Mus'e de Cluny in Paris. Yet another treasure at Thornham Parva is a series of very early wall paintings depicting the life and martyrdom of St Edmund.
