St Mary
Mundon, Essex
Mundon has emerged from one of the most extensive conservation campaigns that we have ever had to mount.
Looking out over the River Blackwater, St Mary's is a very attractive church in an attractive setting, and is Maldon's most distinctive landmark.
Maldon, Essex
It has a squat flint and brick tower with massive buttresses and an early 17th century top stage crowned with a pretty but idiosyncratic 18th century spire.
The nave is Norman, while the south aisle dates from 1886.
A handsome polygonal extension called the Octagon was opened in the early 1990s.
In the south aisle is a stained glass window dedicated in 1991 and commemorating the Battle of Maldon a thousand years earlier, in 991.
It may be that the original church built on this site by St Cedd was destroyed by the very Vikings who won the battle.
