St Bartholomew

St Bart's is a grade I medieval church with 13th century wall paintings, 15th century box pewsand a crypt with tales of being used as a prison; it's the birthplace of Taverner and Jane Austin's cousin was Rector.
Nicholson organ made around 1840 by Richard Nicholson, one of only two in the country.
In the southeast corner of the nave is a precious relic from Saxon times, the head of a wheel cross which the cross arms surrounded by a circle. This was found in the churchyard at the beginning of the 20th century and was probably part of an early preaching cross, before the church was built here.
There is a memorial in the churchyard and informaton on display in the church about the Seagrim brothers, Hugh and Derek, the only siblings to be awarded the Victoria and George crosses respectively in WWII.
The church is approached from the south across the grassed area known as the Camping Land. 'Camping' was a very rough form of free for all football, and fighting!
