St Michael's
Llanyblodwel, Shropshire
Lovely church bursting with local history and a quirky architectural take on Gothic styling, truly a footprint in time.
Llanyblodwel, Shropshire
The first recorded mentions of St Michael's church were its transfer between the Diocese of St Asaph and Lichfield Diocese in 1160. However, of this Norman church only the south doorway now remains. Medieval walls and stone tracery of windows date from the 15th century as does the timber screen. In the year of 1719 a school house and teacher's residence were created within the church followed by orchestra and choir galleries in 1725 and 1735.
The present day church is largely a reconfiguration by Revd John Parker in the mid 1800s whose Gothic interpretation both structurally and decoratively is elaborately extravagant with newly restored internal wall paintings and externally an octagonal steeple reminiscent of the Fribourg Minster which he had been impressed by as a young man.
The church occupies an idyllic rural spot bordering the River Tanat with a roomy car park and has both toilet and kitchen facilities which are accessible and welcoming.
