St Peter

St Peters is situated above the Monnow valley within some magnificent countryside and contains some superb Norman carvings.
Inside, with its open timber roof, flagstone floor and round Norman piers, the nave could be taken for a castle hall. And there is a strong connection with the castle across the road, as the church was built partly for its garrison.
When it was restored in the 19th century by architect JP Seddon the church was on the verge of collapse. Seeing that the small congregation did not need regular use of the entire building he screened the crossing and chancel from the nave. Seddon's chancel is respectful of the origins of the church, but very much of its time.
