St Oswald was killed in battle fighting a pagan rival in the year 642.

The church is 13th century but largely rebuilt in 1857. Its most impressive feature is the 14th century headless effigy of a civilian and a tablet to William Ballett of nearby Woodthorpe Hall who died in 1648. He and his two wives are depicted in Elizabethan dress, kneeling opposite each other across a prayer desk.

St Oswald’s also has a fine collection of unique stained glass dedicated to the rural, religious and farming heritage of the area.
