St Paul's was built in 1884, on land given in 1878 in the will of the late JG Leigh. It was designed by Henry Shelmerdine as a traditional redbrick building with stained glass windows, a fine font and features in the chancel. It is closely linked with the history of Widnes, in the civic centre of the former national centre for the chemical industry.

'The Church Extension Scheme' committee was set up in 1870’s to provide extra churches for the Widnes area, with 9000+ Church of England worshippers and the only churches were at Farnworth, West Bank and Ditton. When the population had grown to 25,000, people raised the funds, with help from famous masters of industry, and St Paul’s was built as a daughter church to 'old St Mary’s' in West Bank.

t Paul’s, without its now familiar tower and clock, was finished in November 1884. The tower and clock were added in 1910.
