St George
West Grinstead, Sussex
Standing in a pleasantly rural setting on the edge of the Weald, with its 13th century tower and shingled broach spire overlooking the River Adur.
The churchyard has something of the character of a village green because of the array of cottages that overlook it, including Margaret Cottages, once the parish workhouse.
Cowfold, Sussex
The oldest part of the church, dating from the 13th century, is the chancel; its north facing lancet windows still have some medieval stained glass.
The sturdily battlemented tower, of Wealden sandstone, is 15th century, as are the timber porch, the octagonal font and an outstanding, very large brass commemorating Thomas Nelond of Lewes priory who died in 1433, though this is not normally on public view.
