The church contains beautiful stained glass windows, including several depicting St Peter. There is the sword inscribed tombstone of Thomas de Anandale, Rector from 1345 to 1374, and a wall monument to William and Joseph Fairer, who Constructed the Asby Alms houses near church.
Early floor tiles in the choir and altar area were manufactured by world famous Maw and Co in Iron Gorge, Shropshire. There is also a highly ornate font and pulpit.
The churchyard is a haven for wildlife, and even has red squirrels. Edward Belasis’ Victorian survey of graves is available in church.
Joseph Clement, recognised by the Science Museum as being first computer engineer, was born here. He worked with Charles Babbage to construct Difference Engine No 1, now in the Science Museum.
The parish contains Great Asby Scar National Nature Reserve and also ‘The Asby Complex’ a very large Special Area of Conservation.
Why not use the church as a base for a local walk around the village of Great Asby which has many historical features which include the Alms houses, St Helens Well, Methodist and Baptist Chapels, Asby Hall and a defensive pele or peel tower which became the Rectory in less violent times. There is an illustrated leaflet available in church.
