St Andrew

The church is the only Trade Kirk in Scotland, and is still the scene of the colourful Kirkin of the Trades held in November.
St Salvador's was an early work by the Gothic Revival architect GF Bodley and its construction, of red sandstone, was finished in 1868.

The exterior shows its Gothic design, yet inside is where Bodley explored past traditions of stencilling walls and ceilings in vibrant colours, especially in the chancel and apse, where little is not richly decorated in some way. The London firm of Burlison & Grylls painted the chancel arch and created much of the church's stained glass.
Soft greens, warm reds, cream and gold dominate in simple abstract or naturalistic patterns. The varying harmonious shades and combinations emphasise and link separate areas of the interior, and the panelled and gilded reredos, which fills the entire east wall cannot be missed. Here is a painted Crucifixion, flanked by 18 further images of apostles, angels, the Virgin and St John, with a detailed scene of the Annunciation depicted above.
The Wadsworth & Maskell organ dates from 1882 and is encased in an ornately gilded and painted frame, in keeping with the rest of the magnificent interior.
