It was erected in memory of a former vicar of Whatton, Thomas K. Hall, who drowned in February 1890 when RMS Quetta was wrecked off Queensland on her way to Thursday Island. His mother, Mrs Sophia E Hall, paid for the church to be built.

Archbishop Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of Henry VIII, was born in Aslockton and the east window of the church, depicting Jesus showing his wounds to 'doubting Thomas' is dedicated to him. It was designed by Michael Stokes in 2002 and he also designed the window in the north wall showing the wreck of the 'Quetta'.
