Annan United Reformed Church
Annan, Dumfries and Galloway
A 1900 gothic church open as a place of worship and remembrance to the 270 people killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988.
Tundergarth, Dumfries & Galloway
The 1900 Scots late Gothic church by James Barbour is a wonderfully warm and welcoming church with the most stunning stained glass windows. Some highlight features include: Broad-eaved box with walls of crazy-paved rubble and a red-tile ridge on the slated roof. Bracketed wooden canopy over the north west door and a small south east vestry with a rose window. The battlement of the south west tower is notable for its exceptionally broad crenelles. There is a chunky Gothic version of a birdcage bellcote on the north east corner.
When the terrorist bombing of Pan American flight 103 occurred on the night of 21st December 1988, the plane's nose section crashed in the field opposite the Church. The Church was used as a staging post for Scottish Police, British Army and RAF teams who ultimately searched 845 square miles of the surrounding countryside for the bodies of the 259 passengers and crew of flight 103, as well as wreckage and clues. The funeral services of several flight 103 passengers took place in the church and three were subsequently laid to rest in its churchyard.
Tundergarth Parish Church remains a place of pilgrimage for the relatives and friends of the victims and continues to be a sacred site for remembrance services, including the first commemoration ceremony of the day on the 35th anniversary of the bombing in 2023. Adjacent to the church is the Remembrance Room, dedicated to the victims of the bombing.
