Westgate Unitarian Chapel is a historic place of worship located in the heart of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. Its roots trace back to a group of non-conformists in Alverthorpe and supporters of Joshua Kirkby, who was ousted from Wakefield Parish Church. In 1697, they united to build a Presbyterian chapel halfway between their settlements, just north of Westgate.
The current building, constructed in 1752, replaced the original chapel. Later in the 18th century, the congregation embraced Unitarianism. This brick structure, two stories high and three bays long, is adorned with a cupola and Venetian windows. Its simple interior, characterized by a 1737 pulpit and an 1847 organ, reflects the congregation's focus on spiritual contemplation. Most of the interior woodwork dates back to the late 19th century.
Beneath the chapel lie intriguing catacombs, which are occasionally opened to the public.
