Hope United Reformed Church
Weymouth, Dorset
Spacious and atmospheric Grade II* listed church overlooking Weymouth harbour.
Weymouth, Dorset
Built in 1836 as the parish church of south Weymouth and extended and reoriented in 1887. A distinguished architect described it thus: 'with the enlargement of the former chancel and the building of the spacious transept to the west an interior of spacious beauty has been achieved.' Much has been achieved architecturally on a difficult, sloping and cramped site.
The church has been beautified by additions. The fine reredos by Kempe and the choir stalls by Harry Hems are of note, as is the fine three manual tracker organ by JW Walker of 1903, regarded by many as one of the finest in the south of England. Much of the stained glass is of high quality although some was lost when the church was damaged in a bombing raid in 1940 but has been replaced. Particularly of note is the Annunciation window by Martin Travers in the Lady Chapel dating from 1948 which replaced one such window.
The building itself has surprised many visitors who have commented on its spaciousness. The number of visitors has been enhanced in the last few years by passengers from all parts of the world travelling on cruise liners which have put in at Portland Port and many appreciative comments have been made by them and other visitors from this country staying here on holiday. Many have described the church as having a 'worshipping and spiritual atmosphere' and have gained solace from their visits.
Holy Trinity is being used increasingly for community events and many musicians have commented on the fine acoustics.
The undercroft was converted into meeting rooms in 1979 to enhance the usefulness of the church and a vestibule built at the west end of the nave. This has been removed to enable the next phase of work including meeting rooms and a kitchen and servery to be built on the ground floor to comply with disability legislation. Unfortunately, this work was undertaken at a time when asbestos was much in vogue and this has had to be removed at considerable additional cost.
