St John the Baptist

Perpendicular with some Decorated features. Chancel with north and south chapels, C14 nave with aisles, north porch and crenellated west tower. This church is very much at the heart of community life in Wittersham which is rather isolated on an old island surrounded by Romney Marsh, and on the borders of the diocese and the county. As with so many of these ancient buildings, it requires regular repair and maintenance if it is to continue in its present role.

The project is to address the stonework of the fine decorated windows. Selected window stonework and repointing of parts of the south aisle. The window tracery to the top of the south window of the south aisle wall has become badly decayed and needs restoring along with the stonework surrounds from the remaining part of the window. In the east window to the south aisle the top of the north jamb has become badly decayed and the stonework is 'delaminating'. Adjacent walls need extensive repointing, and this will be included in the project so that scaffolding costs are minimised.
