A 1½ hour guided tour in and around Norwich Market, celebrating 940 years of buying and selling at the heart of the city, including a cup of tea at Birchley's Loose Leaf Tea and a visit to the Market Church, St Peter Mancroft.

The tour looks at the impact of the Normans; the growth of the medieval Market and the Paston Letters; the great church of St Peter Mancroft; the role of the Tollhouse and later the Guildhall; the market as a place of execution and entertainment; the long lost Market Cross; the coaching era, the inns and the diaries of Parson Woodforde; pubs, banking and the Victorian era; shoemaking and the story of Start-Rite; the building of City Hall and redevelopment of the market in the 1930s and 21st century changes.

We meet at the steps of City Hall, Norwich.

Our start time is 11am and the tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours.


Facilities & refreshments

Public toilets are available on the Market and at The Forum (includes accessible toilet).

Cafe's are available in the city centre and refreshments available on the market.

There is a paid car park near the start and end point at The Forum Bethel Street NR2 1BH. There are other city centre car parks at The Forum, St Giles multi storey and St Andrews multi storey. There is a coach park at King Street, Norwich, NR1 2BU (4 four hour stay).


Accessibility

The tour is on foot throughout. We will be able to sit in St Peter Mancroft church.

Tour accessible with ramps (not steep) and flat surfaces. Plenty for visually impaired to handle and touch. This tour is suitable for wheelchair users. Please contact us for details.
