St John the Baptist dates from 1114 when King Henry I gave the church to the Augustinian Priory at Nostell. Originally a cruciform church with a central tower, it was built in the 13th to 15th centuries.

Evidence of the early church can be seen in the string course of brickwork and in the blocked up windows in the chancel, which is flanked on either side by 13th century chapels.

With good Early English features in the chancel, a Jacobean parclose screen, a Perpendicular font with a late 17th century cover, magnificent 17th century memorials in the Slingsby family chapel and some stained glass by the William Morris studio, St John's is a treasure house at the heart of this historic market town.
