St Bartholomew

St Bartholomew's dates back more than 1,000 years and has been at the centre of life in Maresfield, prominent in the iron industry.

The village has a coaching inn immediately opposite the church and is well served by public transport. There are some beautiful walks from the church, routes can be picked up from the church or Inn.

Maresfield and St.Bartholomew's church also has links to the military who were stationed in the village during both World Wars. Ralph Vaughan-Williams did his military training at Maresfield Camp.

The chancel was extended or rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries and a tower was added in the 15th century.

A more extensive renovation was undertaken by J O Scott in 1875-79, one of several he did in the district. He renewed most of the details in the tower and nave and rebuilt the chancel in 14th century style with transepts, thereby extending the nave to the east. During his renovation an original Norman window was uncovered and glazed.

There is a bell tower dating back to the early 1400s with 8 bells that are rung regularly, a Norman window and various interesting plaques to prominent people and families who have lived in Maresfield, a war memorial and peaceful churchyard
