Sussex Street Christian Centre

The church building is situated in a pedestrianised part of Rhyl town centre to which vehicular access is permitted for visitors.

In respect of its history, the church was built in 1862-63; FD Johnson of Birmingham was the architect and James Taylor the builder. It was called the English Baptist Church and was founded by a number of local Baptists together with some industrialists from Cheshire and Lancashire who came to Rhyl each summer. Records show that, originally, the church was opened in the summer months only.

The church is a tall building, with a full height Corinthian column portico, originally of red brick with painted freestone dressings, including vermiculated quoins, plinth and a deep cornice. Notwithstanding the date when it was built, it shows late Georgian influences. Roofs were of Welsh bluer slate but the building was reroofed with concrete tiles in the 1950s. Many windows been replaced in a manner sympathetic to their heritage but some original sash windows can be seen on the north (rear) elevation.

During the week, entry into the reception foyer is by means of a doorway on the west (left hand) parking area. Other accommodation comprises the sanctuary, ground and first floor lounges/classrooms, kitchen, offices and lavatories (two of which are fully accessible).The sanctuary has a level, carpeted floor along with a staged area and impressive pipe organ on a balcony. Arch topped windows on either side, exposed roof trusses and decorative plaster work provide a flavour of the building’s heritage.

The current organ was installed in the 1960s, having been bought from a 1000 seater Methodist church in Bilston. The church is Grade II Listed for its townscape importance in the centre of Rhyl and for its interest to the history of the Baptist movement in this area. Its establishment and early history serve to illustrate the growth of Rhyl as a holiday resort primarily for English visitors.
