St Mary’s church stands on the site of much older places of worship, the first documented place of worship here was established by Sir Robert de Rockley in 1412 as a private chantry chapel.
Simon Jenkins, in 'England's Thousand Best Churches'; writes that, from the church 'the view is glorious, enjoyed by the weather beaten gargoyles peering from under toppling pinnacles'.
A beautiful and atmospheric church with interesting fragments of medieval stained glass, also some fine Victorian and early 20th century stained glass. Some medieval stonework, including gargoyles and a Saxon cross.
The church contains medieval woodwork, panels and roof bosses, including a green man. There is also Victorian woodwork including a decorated pulpit, made in Sheffield; and a lectern brought from Philadelphia in 19th century!
The church was famous recently for a dramatic special floodlight illumination too mark the centenary of World War I. It is an inspirational setting, and an inspirational space.
The Bradfield Festival of Music takes place each year at the end of June.
