We were delighted to greet 30 of our Friends on our Tour of London's Charterhouse on Thursday 13 October.
The behind the scenes tour, led by two of the resident Brothers, brought to life the long history of the former Carthusian Monastery in London, located between Barbican and Smithfield Market. Since the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, the site has served as a private mansion, a boys' school and an almshouse, which it remains to this day.
One of the highlights of the tour was the chapel, which is used daily for prayer by the Brothers, who since 2017 have included women. The Master and Chief Executive of the Charterhouse Peter Aiers offered a few words on the history of the of the building and his role, and Canon Ann Clarke led a brief prayer which members of the tour were free to join. Canon Ann is the first female Preacher of The Charterhouse. We enjoyed free time to explore the chapel further and visit the Charterhouse's fascinating museum, gathering for a delicious lunch before continuing with a detailed guided tour.
