St Mary’s church sits high in the centre of Linton amidst glorious Herefordshire countryside and has a fascinating history.
Longhope (hope meaning an enclosed valley) is known for the attractive landscape which rises on either side of the road and the stream that stretches along the valley floor.
All Saints church is a Grade II listed building and is described as being a magnificent and prominent building dating back to the twelfth century situated in a very picturesque part of the village. Certainly, the encased spiral staircase leading to the tower could be dated to this time being Norman in design.
The church belonged first to the Abbey of Lyra in Normandy and afterwards to the priory of St Mary & St Florence in Monmouth, these facts appearing in a taxation return dated 1299. By 1340 the patronage had been transferred to the Crown and the date of the induction of the first traceable incumbent was 1st October that year. Surrounding the church is an extensive churchyard, extended north of the church in the 1940s.
There is an active group of 'Friends of Longhope Church' who are dedicated fundraisers who arrange various well supported events. These include festivals, talks and concerts. These events not only raise considerable funds for the church but also provide an outreach into the community.
