Pendlebury, Greater Manchester
This magnificent 19th century building, designed by George Frederick Bodley, is hugely significant in the northwest and is known locally as the 'Miners Cathedral'.
Completed 1969, St Luke is a fascinating example of a modernist church.
Interior features include an impressive nave, east end and sanctuary, where a pair of full height slit windows are angled to cast brilliant light, framing a Crucifix.
It also contains important works by late parishioner and artist Harold Riley whose commissions included royalty, popes and President Mandela. He played as junior for Manchester United, and his sporting paintings are internationally renowned; collectors include Sir Alex Ferguson.
Many of our parishioners are proud owners of their own Riley artwork, which he would draw on a parish newsletter and then hand to the subject of his sketching after Mass!
