Great Driffield, Yorkshire
From the earliest days of Christianity in northern England there has been a place of worship in Driffield.
St Mary's is thought to have been built around 1130 and many Norman elements remain including a spectacular south doorway and a delightful font with a cat with a mouse.
Kirkburn, Yorkshire
The nave is original Norman with flat buttresses, windows and a corbel table. A deep, rather coarse, typically Norman carved zigzag motif appears here and there.
The church and its tower have Early English and Perpendicular influences, with the tower housing an outstanding and unusual tower staircase, a very ancient feature.
The 19th century saw the addition of a richly carved and painted wooden screen, probably by the Victorian architect GE Street (who designed the Royal Courts of Justice), and a reredos in marble, with relief scenes by James Redfern, known for his works in Gothic churches, including Salisbury Cathedral.
