St Mary's was built in 1856 and in 1965 a church hall was built next to the church building. When the church was built there was a large shipping company running on the river Thames from Greenhithe but now the church is situated in the middle of lots of new housing estates and Bluewater shopping centre is just up the road.

The church is quite eclectic in its feel, with raised staging in the chancel, architecture stonework and plaster work and stained glass windows. The nave now has new chairs to replace the wooden pew either side of a central aisle. The lady chapel is in the northeast side aisle where weekday morning prayer and early Sunday morning Communion service are taken.

The population of the parish has nearly doubled in the last 15 years due to the housing boom. The church congregation and other local volunteers run lots of community activities within the church hall which has some form of community activity going on in it nearly every day of the week.

The first church close to the river would have been on the strip of gravel which the present day church stands, there was no sea wall or river bank as we know it today.
