A Norman church, probably rising from Saxon remains, was partly demolished and extensively reconstructed in the 1300s at first in the Decorated and later in the Perpendicular style. It contains three canopied tomb recesses dating from the 14th century, some of the finest examples in Essex, and a magnificent five light east window containing some of the original stained glass, conserved in 2020.

The 14th century font bears a set of heraldic shields, suggesting that they represent the sponsors who undertook the rebuilding of the church. Above the rood screen there is an example of the plaited straw work that was an important village industry in the 19th century. The tower holds a peal of five bells of which the Tenor is the oldest, dating from the 15th century. The bells are rung weekly and for special occasions. There is a short guide leaflet in the church for visitors.
