St Michael
Sittingbourne, Kent
The parish church to the original Iwade village, All Saints is a beautiful ancient building that stands on the site of a pre-Norman chapel.
Iwade, Kent
The chapel of Iwade is mentioned in the Domesday Monachorum of the late 11th century as a daughter chapel of Tenham. No trace of this pre-Norman building remains but it was almost certainly sited on the high ground where the present late 12th or early 13th century church now stands. Thomas is the earliest recorded rector in 1202. The building was added to in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and ‘Victorianised’ in 1874 and 1893. The building has changed little in the past 100 years.
