Alva, Central
With its charming architecture and deep rooted traditions, the church has long been a beacon of spiritual life and a key landmark in the town's cultural heritage.
Alva Parish Church was erected in the 19th century, blending Gothic Revival elements with local architectural influences. This period saw significant growth in Alva, driven by the booming textile industry, and the church quickly became a focal point for the burgeoning community.
The design of the church features Georgian castellated details, central bellcote, lancet windows, crenelated parapets, and conical-finialled round turrets at the corners of the centrepiece. It was built in 1842, with gallery and vestibule added in 1862 and chancel in 1989.
Inside the church, a panelled plaster ceiling, with small pendants and a central Rose of Prince of Wales feathers. At the south end, the rectangular chancel houses the Foster & Andrews Organ 1893. In front of the chancel, an oak communion table, the Agnus Dei carved on a front panel, and three chairs, all designed by Leslie Grahame Thomson, 1933. East of the opening to the chancel is the neo-Jacobean pulpit of 1948-50.
Alva Parish Church plays a pivotal role in the spiritual and social life of the town. It has been a place of worship, celebration, and solace for generations of Alva’s residents.
