Originally, a modest place of worship was established on the site in 1803, a simple structure with a clay floor, no pews, and located well below street level. After the gallery collapsed and the building became unsafe, plans were made for a new church that would reflect the growing faith and aspirations of the local Catholic community.
Construction of the present church began in 1870, with the foundation stone laid by the Most Reverend Dr. Donnelly. Designed by architect John O’Neill of the renowned Dublin and Belfast firm O’Neill and Byrne, the building is an impressive example of French Gothic Revival architecture. Its grand façade features tall lancet windows and an ornate tympanum, masterfully carved by Purdy of London, depicting scenes of the Last Judgement.
Above is a golden swallow. The Golden Swallow Trail is a unique and artistic tribute to one of the town's most famous literary figures, Oscar Wilde. Born in Dublin but spending part of his childhood in Enniskillen, Wilde's legacy is celebrated through more than 100 sculpted golden swallows, which are dotted around the town. These swallows are a nod to Wilde's story The Happy Prince, where a swallow helps a statue of a prince by giving away its gold leaf to the poor.
Inside, visitors are treated to a richly adorned interior. Of special interest is a rare oil mural of The Nativity (c1908) by Michael Healy, a celebrated Irish artist better known for his stained glass. This is the only known oil mural by Healy in a church, making it a unique piece of religious and artistic heritage.
A hidden gem lies beneath the sanctuary: the church crypt. Accessible via a side entrance, it remains a space for quiet prayer and reflection while offering visitors a direct connection to the church's historical and spiritual foundations.
Whether you are drawn by its architectural grandeur, artistic treasures, or its atmosphere of reverence and peace, Saint Michael’s is a must visit for anyone exploring the cultural and religious heritage of Enniskillen.
