Standing proudly on the historic walls of Derry, the First Derry Presbyterian Church tells a powerful story of resilience, faith, and community. Its roots trace back to 1690, when Queen Mary contributed funds to build a meeting house in gratitude to Presbyterians who bravely defended the city during the 1689 Siege. A foundation stone, dating back to 1690, stands as a proud testament to this historic moment.

Fast forward to 1780, and the current First Derry Presbyterian Church proudly opens its doors, boasting a magnificent temple facade adorned with fluted columns and a grand portico. The passage of time took its toll, and an extensive restoration became necessary to combat dry rot. For nine long years, the historic church stood silent, awaiting its revival.

Behind the church, the Blue Coat School, originally founded in 1773 to educate choirboys, has been transformed into a vibrant Heritage Centre. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits that trace the arrival of Presbyterians in Ulster during the 17th century and their enduring contributions to the region’s spiritual, educational, and cultural life. Interpretation panels bring to life the lives of those who shaped the church and community through centuries of adversity.

This site, now a shared space for learning and reconciliation, plays a key role in promoting understanding across traditions in a city with a complex history. The Centre is also a registered charity, dedicated to preserving and sharing this important legacy.

Whether you're interested in architecture, history, or community heritage, a visit to First Derry Presbyterian Church and the Blue Coat School Heritage Centre offers a rich, immersive experience. Wander through the beautifully restored sanctuary, admire its coffered pine ceiling and sandstone façade, and reflect on centuries of perseverance and faith.
