St Cubert
Cubert, Cornwall
St Cubert was a Welsh missionary who came over in the 7th century, together with his companion St Carantoc.
Much of the current church was reclaimed from the church on the dunes and it was built in 1805 from much of the stone and fittings reclaimed from the second church on the dunes.
Christianity in Cornwall is reported to come from the church set up on the dunes by St Piran, this was consumed with sand and a new church was built on the dunes before itself becoming consumed with sand, this resulted in the church at Perranzabuloe being built.
Piran's is the third church to be built in Perranzabuloe, the first being St Piran's Oratory dating back to the 6th century. The Oratory was built in the sand dunes by St Piran. This oratory was eventually consumed by sand and water. A second church was then built further up in the sand dunes, but this again suffered the same fate as the oratory being also consumed by sand. Lord Falmouth in 1800 donated a plot of land where the now present church stands. Some of that church can still be seen in the church today including two of the pillars, the bell tower, font, pew ends and the pulpit.
