When it opened its doors in 1904 it was declared to be ‘a church built by miners for the miners’.
St Paul’s school was also built next to the church. The church was built in the gothic-revival style and has been little altered over the years. It is Grade II listed and situated within a conservation area.
The chancel ceiling is decorated in the Arts and Craft style, consisting of oil painted images on canvas panels. The ceiling was restored in 2009.
The tower and spire were restored in 2009 and the church has a functioning tower clock for the first time in over 50 years. A level access ramp was installed at the front door in 2009. St Paul’s is (and always will be) a continuing Christian work in progress.
