St Mary the Virgin
Ecclesfield, Yorkshire
The earliest reference to a church is from 1141 although it is probable that one existed here well before the Norman Conquest.
The church was designed by Basil Spence, the architect of Coventry Cathedral, and was consecrated on the Eve of the Conversion of St Paul, January 24 1959.
Parsons Cross, Yorkshire
The east and west ends of the building are built entirely in glass, with the north and south sides being brick. Most of the internal furnishings are original, and subsequent additions have been created to fit with the original Spence designs. The altar ornaments were the personal gift of Basil Spence. The green frontal was made by Beryl Dean, to a design by Anthony Blee. The organ is by Conacher. It came from a Methodist Church in Hoyland, which closed in 1961, and was cleaned reconstructed by a team of volunteers.
