Built in around 1020, St Bene't's is the oldest church in the city of Cambridge and diocese of Ely. From it, Corpus Christi College was founded in the fourteenth century (the church served as the College chapel until their own was built, and for many years, particularly during the Reformation, Corpus was known as Benet College).
The original Saxon building was enlarged in the thirteenth century, and further alterations took place in the nineteenth: the Saxon tower survives, as do other traces of the original structure.
