St Michael and All Angels

There has been a long tradition in Britain of dissenting Christians worshipping outside the Church of England, and in that respect Newport was no different.
Newport, Shropshire
A group of these Non conformists combined together in 1765 under the leadership of Revd Jonathan Scott to build the first recorded Independent Chapel in Newport on Beaumaris Lane on land owned by a Mr John Jones who had been expelled from Oxford for his dissenting views.
The Independent cause began in Newport in 1765 when a chapel was erected. However the congregation soon folded and was not revived until 1792 when the chapel was reopened. A new chapel was built in Beaumaris Lane in 1803. This chapel was sold (probably c1832) and subsequently converted into two cottages, which have been demolished within living memory. A new chapel was built in Wellington Road in 1831-2. It was described by contemporaries as 'a neat stuccoed structure & handsome'. At the start of a new century and a new millennium. The local Methodist Church joined with the local United Reformed Church to form a new church which they named Trinity Church. With the proceeds from the sale of the Methodist building, grants and fundraising, refurbishing began and was completed in 2010 making the new chapel a warm, accessible place to worship and a good venue for community use for all ages.
The original building was opened in 1832 as an Independent chapel, which became part of the Congregational church and in 1972 at the union with the Presbyterians became part of the United Reformed Church.
The organ was built in 1913 by Nicolson and Lord, Walsall. It is the oldest organ still being played regularly in Newport.
