Emmanuel Church
Wylde Green, West Midlands
The church began with the faith of one man, Alderman Manton.
Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
In Alderman Manton’s day many new residents of the growing town were returning each Sunday to worship at their old churches in Birmingham, Walsall and Erdington and he wanted to provide a church in Sutton Coldfield. Whilst the church was being built services were held in the Town Hall which at the time was just across the road from where the church was being constructed.
At first the congregation met in what is now the sanctuary, there was a wall between it and what is now the chancel. This area provided space for the Sunday School and Church Meetings. An organ was installed in 1887.
In1904 the wall was removed to enlarge the worship space, pews were installed and a stone pulpit erected and extensions built to provide vestries and a ladies parlour. More land was purchased at the side of the church to build a Sunday School. Whilst the Sanctuary remains as it was the church centre has evolved considerably since then.
Two stained glass windows are later additions.
In 1974 as part of major alterations to the centre of the town the separate Sunday school was demolished and incorporated into one building by Birmingham City Council. Now the entrance has been opened up, the pews replaced with chairs, carpets laid and ancillary rooms have been added or adapted for regular use by church members and local residents.
