Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity is Grade II listed and was originally a medieval church which was rebuilt in 1720 with further restoration taking place in 1864.

Within the church are important memorial tablets to members of two local families who were closely linked to the Industrial Revolution, the Smithemans, who owned the site of Abraham Darby's first furnace in Coalbrookdale, and the Moseleys. There are two listed Grade II memorials in the churchyard and also a grave of a World War I soldier. We have some unusual cast iron headstones and tombstones, which were cast locally.

The church is central to the life of the village, still being used for baptisms, marriages and funerals. It is adjacent to the local primary school, Buildwas Academy, and not far from the village hall. It is open for regular Sunday worship as part of a group ministry and is used by the school for visits and lessons about history and architecture.

It is also close to Buildwas Abbey, of which our church was once part, and is now a monument in the care of English Heritage and is only a few miles from Much Wenlock which is also a tourist destination because of its Priory and its links with William Penny Brookes, the founder of the modern Olympic Games.

Our churchyard is home to local wildlife, including butterflies and slow worms.
