St Margaret of Antioch

This living church, dating from the mid 12th century, stands at an ancient crossroads just over the river from Durham World Heritage site (and very accessible by public transport). On entering. the visitor discovers a beautifully proportioned space, light and colourful within the Norman stonework. The font is of local Frosterley Marble and is as old as the church itself; it continues to be used for baptisms today. In one corner of the church an ancient stone carving stands alongside a modern statue of Mary and Jesus. There is also a fine set of Victorian stained glass windows, depicting the main events of Jesus' life. Colourful windows, fabrics and flowers contrast with bright limewashed walls and dark 17th and 18th century woodwork. One visitor called this 'the most prayer friendly space in Durham', another 'a hidden gem'. Come and discover for yourself; all welcome.
