All Saints, Stechford is an impressive Gothic style church in Birmingham designed by JA Chatwin in 1898.
Stechford, West Midlands
All Saints opened as a mission church in 1877. The exterior of the walls is constructed of banded brick with alternate grey headers and terracotta brick stretchers. Rectangular in basic shape, it consists of a high ceiling nave, four bays long, with north and south aisles. The bays consist of arcades formed from octagonal stone piers with pointed brick arches and stone hood mounds. The interior has exposed red brick with stone dressings. The four high clerestorey windows to the north and south sides of the central nave, which have a continuous stone hood mould and stone cill band, bring in light, as do the four large lower stained glass windows in the north and south aisles.
A low sandstone wall separates the nave from the chancel in Chatwin style. The chancel arch is supported on stone cluster piers, and the wagon style chancel roof is supported on stone corbels. The east window is made of stained glass with modern motifs, inserted in 1969, whereas the memorial wooden panelling to the sanctuary was added in 1940s. The main entrance door is at the south west end of the nave which opens into a vestibule. The polygonal apse at the west end initially housed a fine alabaster stone baptismal font which has now been moved half way down the south aisle. the Lady chapel at the south east end has modern memorial windows. The choir and inner vestries, in the same style and brick pattern, were added to the original building in 1934.
