Constructed shortly after the Napoleon Wars and just yards from the Napoleonic Military Canal (which goes to Hythe in Kent), the building held the apparatus to launch rockets to sea to rescue stranded men on wrecked boats. Next door the Pett Level independent Rescue Boat is still in operations and practices every Sunday morning.

The church still has one service a month and is open every day and welcomes visitors with coffee and tea, cards, books. The setting is rural and seaside and popular with bird watchers. The beach was used in Ashes to Ashes, David Bowie's video.
