Hathersage, Derbyshire
Situated in the heart of the Peak District, St Michael's offers a place of worship, community and heritage. The porch which was added to the church around 1500 by Robert Eyre's son, was originally intended as a meeting place for parish business, hence the stone benches on either side. A number of commemorative, beautiful stain glass windows add colour and light to the interior, whilst a bronze wall monument commemorates the fallen of the two world wars with a stone plinth in which the book of remembrance is kept. The Lady Chapel is a special area of prayer and reflection, and is enhanced by the beautiful altar frontal and wall panel embroidered by Juliet Hemmingway.
Little John is said to have lived in Hathersage and buried in the churchyard, with his grave providing great interest for visitors. Others are interested in Charlotte Bronte's visit to her friend Ellen Nussey who was the sister of Henry Nussey the vicar of Hathersage, as Charlotte stayed with them in the vicarage for 3 weeks in the summer of 1845. Whilst there, the church, the Eyre graves, the surrounding area and buildings provided Charlotte with a good deal of material which she used in her novel Jane Eyre.
