A church existed on this site in the 13th century, originally as a chapel of ease.
A church is mentioned in Domesday, and later the Norman overlords built a small church of triassic sandstone probably on the site of the wide north aisle.
Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire
In medieval times the dedication was to St Oswald but changed at some point before the 17th century.
Inside, interesting features are the 13th century tracery of the east window of the north aisle, a medieval altar slab, and several memorials and tombstones, including that of Sir Robert de Jort, lord of the manor and sheriff of Nottingham in the 14th century. There are three windows by CE Kempe and two of modern glass.
