Founded in the 7th century and hidden deep in the Berwyn mountains, the tiny church at St Melangell’s is home to the earliest surviving Romanesque shrine in northern Europe.
A simple village church in an ancient elevated churchyard, in a stunning setting with views up the valley and to the surrounding hills.
Llangynog, Powys
A church here was first mentioned in 1254, and the current building is thought to incorporate some early fabric, although it was heavily remodelled and repaired in the 18th century and 19th century.
An excellent place to start a walk, or pilgrimage, to the Romanesque shrine church of St Melangell at Pennant Melangell which is a beautiful 4 mile walk away, where you will find the oldest Romanesque shrine in Europe.
There is a spacious public car park in the heart of the village, with public toilets, a stone's throw from the church, and two public houses provide refreshment opportunities! There is often a display of local information and historic photographs of the local area both here and at the Shrine itself.
