Built in a neo gothic style, St Peter's was opened in 1900, and extended in 1933.

The chancel and eastern part of the nave of St Peter's were beautifully constructed using Scrabo sandstone at the very end of the 19th century and furnished to a very high standard. In the following decades, the church was described as 'a slice of a cathedral', and as having 'an appearance and dignity such as is rarely met with in our local ecclesiastical structures'. The west end of the building was extended in the early 1930s. In addition to the original furnishings, the church now contains several exquisite items from both the Chapel of the Resurrection (a small chapel of ease built for the Earl of Shaftesbury in Belfast Castle, a short distance away), and the former St James church (located farther down the Antrim Road towards Belfast city centre, and which was closed in 2007).
