St Mary Magdalene

St Mary Magdalene is a small parish church set in a churchyard at the end of Church Road in Sparkford.

Though of ancient origins, the tower is 14th century and the first incumbent was inducted in 1297, the church was extensively rebuilt at the end of the Georgian period. The church is unusual as it has two transept like structures on the south aspect, one the vestry and the other was originally the porch is now home to a small chapel reflecting the Great War and houses a super little two manual organ over it.

The chapel has a superb east facing stain glass window of St Michael and St George by Sir Charles Nicholson and a pane of glass from Flanders in the west facing window. The other major stain glass feature is the east window which features Christ and the Disciples along with St Mary. The choir pews ends are of 14th century origin and were originally on the end of the pews in the nave, being reassigned when the old pews were removed and replaced with bench style seating and as with the pulpit were crafted locally.

The churchyard house numerous graves which many local families continue to tend and three table tombs associated with the Blandford family.
