Dating from 1849, the building was extended and reconfigured in 1909 to a design by St John Phillips.

The church follows a typical Methodist design, with a high central pulpit and rows of pews on the ground floor and in a gallery that extends over three sides of the church. The organ, which was behind the pulpit, has been repositioned to the side of the church and some pews have been removed at the front to create space for special services.
The church is distinctive because of the cupola added in 1909, and is unusual in that the main entrance is in front of the congregation. Some stained glass was added to the high, arched windows in the second half of the last century.

Donaghadee Methodist Church was awarded £7500 funding from the National Churches Trust as part of the Treasure Ireland project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the Pilgrim Trust and the Department of Communities.
