It dates from the 12th century, with 14th century additions, and it was extensively restored in 1876.

The church has a painted timber ceiling, and is especially notable for work by Victorian artist Nathaniel Westlake. He was most well known for his stained glass, but at East Garston he also painted the reredos, and, in the nave, a Tree of Jesse.
